Lincoln MKS replacing Lincoln Towncar in 2009

2009 Lincoln MKS
By Jonathan Wong and Bob Gritzinger
After years of neglect, Lincoln is getting serious about the large luxury sedan segment again with the introduction of the 2009 MKS.
While the Lincoln Town Car has remained largely unchanged and mostly relegated to the service industry, the MKS captivates with style, comfort and technology.
When the MKS arrives in showrooms next summer, it will have a base price of less than $38,000. Fully loaded models should have a sticker price of around $48,000, Lincoln officials said.
And a year after its launch, the MKS will be the first Ford Motor product to get the automaker’s new turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine–which the company says combines V8 power with V6 fuel economy. Lincoln expects that 60 percent of MKS buyers will be new to the brand.
The MKS’ design represents the first of Lincoln’s modern product portfolio and borrows cues from past Lincolns. The double wing split front grille, inspired by the 1941 Continental, is the most notable nod to Lincoln’s design heritage. Another cue: Symmetrical wing-like instruments in the interior, adapted from 1960s Lincoln models.
Interior features include specially developed leather comfort seats, a large rear-opening door in its class, heated and cooled front seats and heated rear seats, and a dual-panel moon roof. Adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam and a voice-activated communication and entertainment system highlight the technology offerings.
Power comes from a new 3.7-liter, 270 hp V6 connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. The MKS arrives in showrooms next summer. The base price will start below $38,000.
It will add more fuel to Lincolns sales momentum. Through the first 10 months of this year, Lincoln’s U.S. sales are up 14.7 percent, while Mercury’s are down 9.0 percent. With 112,678 sales through October, Lincoln trails Mercury by 29,909 units.

Sorry. The MKS is no replacement for a Town Car, that seats 6, has a velvet smooth forgiving ride, is a full sized car with a trunk just about double the room of the small MK-S which as anyone can see, is a warmed over Mercury Montego/Sable. The back seat’s cushion is so short, your under knee has zero support, and is lifted directly out of a Montego/Sable car. It’s a sporty Lincoln Sedan. It’s no competition for a Cadillac DTS or a 2009 Town Car, that will be made.
I don’t think that Jonathan Wong and Bob Gritzinger are very much into cars. I see many many privately owned Town Cars and hundreds of Livery Town Cars. Many people are on their 3rd or 4th, since the current style came out in 1998. Drive a MKS down a cobblestone street and then a Town Car. Hit some NYC pot holes or go over some RR tracks in your MKS and then do it again in a Town Car…. there is simply NO comparasion !!
Is there a new town car model coming out?
The MkS is no match for the super luxury town car.So you buy your town car and i ll pimp it for your satifaccion
I agree the MKS is no comparison to the Town Car. I have had several Town Cars, and the ride is good. I just wish they would have kept the good leather in them that they had in the older models. I have a new Town Car and the leather is more like pleather than leather if you get my point.
Nope, the MKS is not even half a TC. I wont accept it as substitude for a luxury sedan when renting a limo. In the end the customer makes the decision, not a board of directors.
Noooooooooooooooooooooo. Lincoln Town Car or my next car will be a Caddy DTS.
I think the car companies are committing slow suicide, like a vomit stained alcoholic slumped in a Bowery doorway. It’s just a matter of time. How could they dispose of the Town car? It’s insane. If anything they should have ramped up the powerplant and electronics.
I’ve owned three Town cars. The best production car under $50,000 in the world in my opinion.
There is no substitute for a town car. I had my first (a 2004) and I put 100,000 trouble free and comfortable miles on it. My next was a 2006 which I really love. I have 40,000 miles on it and I plan to keep it for quite some time yet. I tried an MKS and it’s a pathetic substitute for the ride, style, and luxury appeal of a true Town Car. I hope they make it forever! But with the blunders the auto industry has been making in recent years they seem more likely to ‘shoot themselves’ in the foot once again by trying to end Town Car production. Those making these decisions are the same bone heads who dropped the ‘Taraus/Sable’ badge names and totally confused the marketplace to a point where they had to go back to the original badge names–that unheard of in automotive history. Listen Ford to your customers!! Keep the Town Car going!!
NOOOOOO!! I’m sick and tired of all these bland ugly FWD cars automakers keep producing. Listen to what customers want. DO not kill these reliable body on frame RWD Cars with Solid Live Axels. When something works for a company for as long as it has, why do they go and kill it? There is no way this fwd piece of shit will even come close to a Town Car. Quit forcing us to drive your little ugly FWD pieces of shit. This sucks. And you wonder why so many people drive Pickups? That’s because they do not want these crappy little fwd cars we are being forced into. FORD – LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THEM.
I have a 98 TC with 251,000 miles on it; the best car ever. FMC needs to keep the TC available.
This is suicidel for Ford co. with a product which is selling without any question or doubt in customers mind. I am driving this TC since 1994 keep changing newer model and never thought about Cadilac, if they replace TC then there is end of it and many users (fan) of TC will be diverted to Cadilac (expensive in repair but smooth ride)God bless America.
I have had many different cars, including the Cadillac Sedan Devill, I like it very much, it was a nice soft ride, I sold it with 25 thousand miles on it, I wanted to get another Cadillac Sedan Deville but they have dowsized it so much and ruined the body style that I bought a 2007 Lincon Town Car and I LOVE IT ! I only have 16 thousand miles on it and will be heart broken if they discontinue making it .. It is the best car I have ever had .. Listen up Ford, you see what is happening to GE ..
Two cars. 1955 Packard Patrician (in daily service) and 1989 Towncar. I’ll keep repairing them and drive both until I die before switching to a front-drive, no-frame, no room throwaway with features that I don’t need, don’t want and WILL NOT pay today’s over-inflated prices for.
Lots of luck Detroit and American auto industry. You’re committing suicide.
I own a 98 LTC. I love it.
I just read a review of LTC on leftlanenews.com and I was disappointed, then encouraged by the last few sentences. Who can confirm that Lincoln will REPLACE the LTC by another full-size RWD for 2011? (Not the MKS!)
I sure would like to know before I buy.
Thanks.
Mike
The new MKT should seat 6. Its based on the same Volvo derived platform that the new Lincoln MKS is based on. The MKT is an upmarket cousin to the Ford Flex. Lincoln MKT should feature the EcoBoost V6 turbo, as well as an for all-wheel drive. With three rows of captain chairs and leather surfaces of higher quality and finish than those found in the Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossover, the MKT should deliver better performance, handling, features, and comfort than the Town Car. I want one.
Looks like alot of folks agree with me (See #3 above).
It’s your FINAL chance to get a NEW 2010 Town Car. They are winding down, as I type. Buy the one called the “Continential Edition” ~ it’s got all the special little features that make it unique.
My 2003 Town Car Springtime Feature Model “The Limited” has just 10,006 miles on her. I want her to last a long time. I run around in a 10 year old Jeep Cherokee. Another car ‘ya cannot kill. There are rebates on the 2010 T.C. beginning now.
