2017 NYC Toll Hikes – MTA is really making it hard for New Yorkers

NYC (MTA) voted to keep the base fare flat for another two years in approving the lowest fare and toll increase since 2009, when the MTA committed to a biennial schedule for regular increases.

The plan approved today increased fares and tolls over the next two years by 4 percent – or less than 2 percent annually and less than the rate of inflation. The MTA was able to hold the necessary increases below inflation as a result of the agency’s continued discipline in keeping costs down. The new fares, which take effect March 19, will allow the MTA to continue to provide safe and reliable service.

The 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard, which is heavily used by lower-income and frequent riders, will increase by only a dollar to $32; the 30-day Unlimited Ride MetroCard will increase from $116.50 to $121. Both of these options were the same under the two proposals presented to the MTA Board.

The Single Ride Ticket remains at $3. The cash fare for Express Buses remains at $6.50, making the effective fare with the bonus $6.19.

The following table summarizes these changes:

The majority of Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad customers will see weekly and monthly passes increase 3.75% or less, with rises to monthly tickets capped at $15. Intermediate monthly and weekly ticket increases are also capped at 3.75%. Some one-way fares will have larger increases only because fares must occur in 25-cent increments. For these one-way fares, any increase greater than 6 percent would be not more than 50 cents per ride; West of Hudson customers will see a 2% increase in fares; City Ticket remains unchanged at $4.25.

Tolls will rise less than 25 cents for cars crossing MTA Bridges and Tunnels facilities and using a New York Customer Service Center (NYCSC) E-ZPass, 73% of total crossings. Customers who pay with cash, Tolls by Mail or a non-NYCSC E-ZPass will see increases of 6.3% to 9.1%. This proposal is consistent with the MTA policy to increase the price differential between cash and E-ZPass to encourage E-ZPass use, which is the least expensive way to collect and pay tolls.

A History of the New York Limousine

Known as the preferred automobile for the rich and famous limousines are one of the most secure and comfortable ways to make your way through the streets of New York. There’s nothing that will make you feel more like a celebrity than stepping out of a sleek limousine and some companies will actually roll out a red carpet for you to make your grand entrance.

What Exactly Is A Limousine?

Limousines are a luxury sedan driven by a chauffeur that has a partition between the driver and the passenger section. They are the most expensive form of ground transportation and are usually associated with those of affluence and authority. The first limousine was built in 1902 and was designed so that the driver sat outside of the main section under a covered compartment.

The first stretch limousine was created in 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas by a company named Armbruster. Their goal was originally just to transport famous bands and their equipment often being referred to as “big band buses.” Traditional limousines can fit up to five people in the back and up to two people in the front with the driver offering a capacity for seven passengers. Modern day stretch limousines can carry up to three passengers in the back and have a partition that was designed as a sliding glass window, which is often soundproof, and prevents conversations between passengers in the rear from being overheard by the chauffeur.

Who Uses Limousines?

The majority of limousines are owned by companies offering their own services. Some government branches own them as a way to transport government officials, while others are individually owned. Clients looking for limousines and chauffeurs are usually looking for them for special events. For VIPs like government officials they can be outfitted with additional features like armoring and bullet proof glass. New York limos are perfect for special events like weddings, bachelorette and bachelor parties, and proms. Amenities like audio players, televisions, video players and bars with mini fridges make nights, or days, out that much memorable.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission

A Charter-mandated agency created in 1971 the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission are responsible for licensing and regulating over 50,000 vehicles like medallion taxicabs, for-hire vehicles, emergency vehicles like ambulances and limousines. They were founded to deal with the increasing amount of issues the vehicle industry has and set the standards for taxicab rates, insurance and coverage requirements, driver and equipment safety, and the criteria for the licensing of operators, vehicles and drivers.

As one of the most active taxi and limousine licensing agencies in the U.S. the Commission plays a significant role in making sure the people who live in New York as well as the people visiting the city by making sure any companies with vehicles for hire always maintain their high standards, rules and regulations. They also make sure vehicles are kept up-to-date with new technological advances and are constantly thinking of new ways to help people get around more efficiently.

So the next time you’re out looking for the perfect New York wedding limo or just a luxurious ride you can rest assured knowing that you can find a safe and secure limousine right in the Big Apple.

Tourism Tuesday Featuring Yankee Stadium

alg-yankee-stadium-jpgFor all you baseball fans out there, Yankee Stadium has a lot to offer. Don’t let the curse of Great Bambino scare you off. The Yankee baseball dynasty is here to stay. The Yankees have always had a competitive and dominant team and this epic empire is housed in a jewel of a building. Yankee Stadium is lush and exciting. It can house over fifty thousand people and is located in the southern section of the Bronx in New York City. Whether you go there for a great time or great game or both, you won’t leave disappointed. Even if by some chance you aren’t a baseball fan, Yankee Stadium hosts other events like concerts and even graduation services.

Yankee Stadium is a place of legend. It is one of the meccas of baseball,  housing one of the most prestigious baseball teams of all time. Although the Yankees have been around for quite awhile, the current Yankee stadium is relatively new. The new Yankee Stadium which is built next door to the older one was completed in 2009. It took a lot of time and effort to complete and cost over four hundred million dollars. This was in addition to the expense of the rebuilding of the New York Mets Stadium as well. Although the new layout is fairly similar to the older version, Yankee Stadium has been updated with some fantastic perks.

In the new stadium, the seats for everyone are roomier and now there is a cup holder at every seat. There are also more bathrooms. All of these are big improvements, but the biggest and most lucrative one is the inclusion of a lot more suites. These suites and skyboxes can be rented out at any time during the year. It does not have to be baseball season. For all you tried and true baseball fans out there, the Yankee’s franchise has a lot of history. You can witness it all first hand at their museum which is located on the lower level near gate six.

When you come to Yankee Stadium there is a lot to do. Of course if it is in season, you can watch a spectacular game. But, even if it isn’t baseball season, there is a lot of action to be had at Yankee Stadium. For all you food lovers, there is a lot to choose from.  You can get baseball staples like hot dogs and cracker jacks or more eclectic selections like candy apples and even sushi. At Yankee Stadium, there are over 25 fixed food stands and over a hundred mobile ones. You are not limited to just stale hot dogs or greasy burgers, there is a lot of food to choose from.  Yankee Stadium even houses an upscale steakhouse and Hard Rock Café.

No matter what your life style or your personal interests are, Yankee Stadium has something to keep you enthralled and entertained.

Tourism Tuesday Featuring New York City High Line

The New York City High Line is a one mile long city park which was built on an elevated section of the New York Central Railroad.  It is located on the western side of Manhattan.  The former railroad tracks have been converted into a beautifully redesigned aerial greenway.  The park goes from Gansevoort Street, through Chelsea, by way of 30th Street and onto the West Side Yard, close to the Jacob Javitz Convention Center.  Gansevoort Street is located just three blocks from West 14th Street, also known as the Meatpacking District.

This stunning and newly constructed park was designed by the architectural firm of James Corner Field Operations and architects Diller Scofidio and Renfro.  The designing of the plants was the responsibility of Piet Oudolf from the Netherlands.  Backers of the HighLinePark projects include Diane von Furstenberg along with her husband and children and hotel developer, Andre Balazs.

There are nine entrances into the park and four of those entrances are handicap accessible.  The park is open everyday of the week from 7:30 in the morning until 11:00 in the evening.  There are rules associated with the park, like everything else in life.  Most of the rules are pretty common sense like no walking on the plants, no bikes, no drinking and no littering.

The New York City High Line has attracted a lot in the pop culture scene.  In the 2007 smash hit “I Am Legend,” some of the scenes in the movie were filmed below the High Line as well as in the Meatpacking District.  In 2012, there was an episode of The Simpsons called “Moonshine River” where the family takes a trip to New York City.  Bart and an old girlfriend had taken an outing on the High Line.

The High Line features food vendors who sell products that are good to eat and good for the land as well.  As of 2012, there were nine vendors selling their food on the High Line.  Bark, for example, sells American classics that are created from ingredients that are not only local, but are of the highest quality.  Their signature Bark Burger is made from organic beef and seasonal vegetables, sure to be a delicious bite.  L’Arte Del Gelato, also in the park, was created almost a decade ago and makes gelati and sorbetti with first class ingredients.  They use milk that comes from Battenkill Valley Creamery in Salem, New York.  Melt Bakery sells delicious ice cream sandwiches, also made from local ingredients.  Their signature “Lovelet” sandwich is created from red velvet cakes with cream cheese ice cream, not friendly in calories, but very friendly in taste.

The spring and summer months will undoubtedly bring thousands of city residents and tourists to the High Line. Will you be one of them?
